Cosmetic Dermatology Treatments > Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a popular method of eliminating superficial telangiectasias ("spider veins"). Spider veins (telangiectasias) are small, dilated capillaries seen frequently on the thighs, around the knees, on the calves, and around the ankles. The microinjection technique consists of instilling either a concentrated saline or sclerosant solution into the dilated vessels using very small needles. The solution irritates the inner lining of the vessels so they cease to carry blood, and the body slowly replaces them with invisible, harmless scar tissue. Several injections may be needed for a specific area of telangiectasias.
