Cosmetic Dermatology Treatments > Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a popular method of eliminating superficial telangiectasias ("spider veins"). Spider veins (telangiectasias) are small, dilated capillaries seen frequently on the thighs, around the knees, on the calves, and around the ankles. The microinjection technique consists of instilling either a concentrated saline or sclerosant solution into the dilated vessels using very small needles. The solution irritates the inner lining of the vessels so they cease to carry blood, and the body slowly replaces them with invisible, harmless scar tissue. Several injections may be needed for a specific area of telangiectasias.
Some specifics:
- Usually the vessels disappear over 1 to 2 months, but occasionally fading is gradual over many months. Recurrence can occur over 1 to 5 years.
- The number of treatments needed to clear or improve the condition differs from patient to patient, depending on the extent of spider veins present. Optimal results usually require 2 to 5 treatment sessions. The number varies with the extent of involvement as well as the response to each treatment.
- The goal is to produce a 75-80% improvement with multiple treatments. Although some people achieve almost complete resolution, 100% clearing does not occur in just one treatment, and may not occur even after several treatments. About 10% of patients may not respond at all. There is no guarantee that your spider veins will improve or disappear. Patients may see improvements continue over the course of several months.
- Extremely small vessels and large, bulging, blue varicose veins cannot be treated with these techniques.
- While side effects are uncommon, the following are possible: itching, stinging or pain, temporary muscle cramps during injections, temporary hives, slight bruising at the injection site, pigment changes, blisters or ulcers, scarring, matting (development of tiny grouped vessels), small clots, mild swelling
Preparation for procedure:
